This is one of four posts from our trip to Ireland and Scotland in the Summer of 2019. We have three other posts from this trip from Dublin, Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Edinburgh, Scotland.
Our trek to the Scottish Highlands was the last part of our trip. We rented a car in Edinburgh (that Jay drove on the left side of the road most of the time) and drove to St. Andrews for a quick visit. By the way, I have included St. Andrews and Stirling in this post even though they aren’t actually in the Highlands. They were stops we made on the way. We had lunch at a cute little restaurant at the The Golf Inn right next to The Old Course at St. Andrews. We walked around the course and the shops for a while, walked around the University of St. Andrews, then drove around the town some. There were a few other places we wanted to stop and see but didn’t have time. 🙁 We still had things to see in Stirling and had to drive to our cabin near Fort Augustus where we stayed for the next three nights.

After the castle tour we had dinner at a restaurant in Stirling called Brea, which was recommended to us by a local resident. The food and drinks were very good, and the staff was very nice. They even worked us in though they were booked up that night.
After dinner we drove to our cabin which was about 10 minutes outside of Fort Augustus. It was a cute little place, but kinda in the woods and– no wifi! 😳 You should’ve seen how big the six eyes in the car suddenly became when I announced that!
We did survive the night with no connection to the outside world. The next day we drove into Fort Augustus, had lunch at the Lock Inn, shopped a little, and walked around the town and Loch Ness.

Then we drove to Glenfinnan to see to the Glenfinnan Viaduct. That is a railway viaduct that overlooks the Glenfinnan Monument and the waters of Loch Shiel. It is most well-known as the railway for the Hogwart’s Express from the Harry Potter movies. There are a few spots to view the viaduct. I don’t think the one we chose had the best viewpoint. We had a side view as you can see in the photo in the gallery. Still, it was very cool. No tickets were needed. We just parked and followed the signs to the trail.
